Elliott County’s Civil War Veterans in 1890

By John A. Stegall    johnstegall@hotmail.com

One installment in a series of articles Mr. John A. Stegall prepares and publishes in

The Elliott County News, this article first appearing in the Aug 8, 1997 edition of said

paper and a continuation from July 18, 1997.  Transcribed with permission from the

author by Samone Ratcliff. on Nov 16, 1999.

James A. Miller:  This veteran was deceased by 1890 and information regarding

his military service was given by his widow, Ellen Miller.  She stated that he was a Pvt.,

in Co., C, 59th Ky., Cav., from Sept 23, 1863 to Sept 15, 1865.  Her post office was

Stephens.

The 1860 Lawrence Co, KY census names a James A. Miller as a resident of that

county, and his wife’s name was Ellen.  James A. Miller was 40 years of age, which

would have made him a bit old to serve in the Civil War, but perhaps not.  Ellen was 37

years of age.  Children listed as living in the Miller household were:  Missouri A., 12,

Naridone, 11; Leander C., 7; Line L., 5; Louisa V., 3; and  Morgan H., 1 year.  Another

child, Martha Thompson, age 11 years, was also living in the Miller home.

James A. Miller is not named the 1870 Elliott Co census and may have been still

residing in Lawrence Co.

On Apr 23, 1878. Munerd Miller was born in Elliott Co to James A. Miller and

Della Gillum. If this is the veteran James Miller, it would appear that an error was made

in recording the name of the mother, not an uncommon error for that time.  It was

recorded that the father was born in NC; the mother in Carter Co, KY.

A James A. Miller, age 14, and a step-son of John H. Elliott, is named in the 1880

Elliott Co census.  Obviously, this could not be the veteran.

In 1900, Millard Miller, who was undoubtedly the child recorded as Munerd in

the 1880 census, was 22 years of age and a resident of the Little Fork Precinct.  His

widowed mother, Delilah, age 54,was living in his home.  It is my belief that this was the

window and son of James A. Miller, but I have no concrete proof.

In the 1910 Elliott Co census, a Manard Miller, age 29, was residing in the Little

Fork Precinct.  If this is the same Munerd or Millard Miller, the age does not appear

consistent.  In both the 1900 and 1910 reports, the wife’s name was Syntha.

I find no additional information on James A Miller in my records.

Corneleus Moore:  Sgt., Co., B, 14th Ky., Inf.  This veteran indicated that his

military service began on Oct 10, 18 61 and ended on Jan 31, 1865.  His post office was

Fielden, and he indicated that was “Shot in the left thigh.”

It is recorded in the 1860 Lawrence Co Ky census that a Cornelius Moore, age 28,

was a resident of that county.  Since the age certainly would put him in the proper range,

I assume that this is the Civil War veteran named above.  Also, a Lawrence Co residency

in 1860 would have put him in close proximity to the Stephens area o n Little Fork of

present day Elliott Co.

Laura, the wife of Cornelius Moore in 1860, was 24 years of age.  Their children

were as follows:  Calista J., 6; Julia A., 3;  and Louisa, 1 year.

I don not find Cornelius Moore in either the 1870 or 1880 census reports for

Elliott Co; however, he was, obviously, in Elliott Co when the 1890 census was taken.

He is also named in the 1890 tax records for Elliott Co, which show him to have been the

owner of 100 acres of land in the Little Fork Precinct.  He indicated that he had only one

child between the ages of 6 and 20 years in his home.

I find no further record of Corneius Moore, which leads me to believe that he

might have moved from Elliott Co after 1890.

Addison Murray:  Pvt., Co., 5th., Ky., Mtd., Inf., C.S.A.  A resident of the

Cracker’s Neck Precinct in 1890, he indicated that his military service extended form

1861 into 1862.

The Reece Murray family is enumerated in the 1850 Morgan Co, KY census with

the indication that Reece and his wife, Lucinda, were both born in VA.  Their oldest child

was born in TN, and the next five children were born in VA.  Their first-born son was

Anderson, who was 19 years of age in 1850.  Reece Murray is again named in the 1860

Morgan Co census, along with Addison W. Murray, 29 years of age and born in VA.  I

believe this was the son referred to as Anderson in 1850.

Morgan Co marriage records indicate that Addison W. Murray and Rachel Lewis

were married Sept 16, 1855 in that county, and indeed, in the 1860 Morgan Co census

Addison W. Murray’s wife was listed as Rachel, 27 years of age and born KY.  They had

3 children: Ellen, 3; Reece, 2; and Eliza J., 1 year.  A child, Elizabeth McMelon, age 7

years, was also in their household.

When the first census was taken in the newly-formed Elliott Co in 1870, Addison

Murray was listed as a resident of Precinct #1, Martinsburg; however, if one goes

according to those listed nearest to his name in the census report, he most likely lived

nearer the Newfoundland community that to present day Sandy Hook.

In 1870, Addison Murray stated that he was 39 years of age and was born in VA,

statistics that were consistent with those he gave in 1860.  His wife, Rachel, was 35,

which was also consistent with the 1860 record.  Their children named in this census

report were: Ellen, 13; Reese B., 12; Eliza Jane, 11; William, 9; Logan, 7; Willis, 5;

Lucinda, 3; and Augustus, 2.

In 1880, Addison Murray was listed as A.W. Murray, age 49.  Rachel was 46, and

the following children were still at home with them:  Reece B., 22; Jane, 20; William, 19;

James T., 18; John W., 16; Lucinda, 14; Augustus W., 12; Martin, 10; Sarah, 8; Mary B.,

6; Edward F., 6; and Charles, 4.  (Ellen, the oldest child married by 1880.  A birth record

form the vital statistics of Elliott Co indicate that on June 2, 1878, a daughter, Molly, was

born to Abijah Lewis and Ellen Murray Lewis.)

Obviously, Addison Murray was a resident of Elliott Co in the 1890 census, and

the Elliott Co tax records for that year indicate that he was a resident of the Cracker’s

Neck Precinct and the owner of 75 acres of land.

In 1900, Addison Murray stated that he was born in Nov of 1830, and was 69

years of age; Rachel was 67.  They indicated that they had been married 44 years and

were the parents of 13 children.  On child, Hattie T., age 13 (born Nov 1886), was at

home with them.  Rachel Lewis Murray was born in June 1833.

Addison Murray is not in the 1910 Elliott Co census, therefore, I assume that he

was deceased.  At first, I thought he was buried in the King Cemetery at Newfoundland

but if that is his burial place, his grave is apparently no identified.
